What should I know about creating a new character? Never played an MMORPG but I'm quite familiar with the FF series

Tag. I bought a 60 day time card but haven't had time to play it yet. I did make a character just to see how the process is done but that's it.

What kind of character did you make?

Just don't play as a Lalafell. They're cringe.

But honestly, there's not much to keep in mind as far as the character creator goes. I think it asks for you to make up a birthday (and choose 1 of 12 deities to worship) for your OC, but it doesn't impact anything as far as I'm aware.

And if you end up not liking how you look later on, there's an NPC you can find which opens up customization whenever you want, so you can change whatever then.

A couple things:

1) When you beat the ARR MSQ you get an item that lets you go back and change your race, looks, etc. Pretty much everything but your name can be reselected. So if you messed up don't feel bad.

2) Reminder that you can play every class on one character and it's as simple as clicking a button to swap classes.

3) If you're trying to play with friends you don't need to be on the same server, just the same Data Center.

He mixes in some humor but it gives the basics of each job.

Like most MMO's minor stat differences that don't matter past level 5 and cosmetics

You pick your first job at character creation which determines one of three starting cities. Once you hit level 10 you have the option to change jobs by taking the starting quest and equipping the weapon for that class.

You choose your starting class in the character creator, but it's not tied to which race you choose. The class does determine your starting town, though.

And then you can become any other class/job after you start the game and find the starting point for their quest line.

I started a few months ago. Race doesn't matter. Play what you like but I think the elves look weird. Customization is fantastic, here's my character:

Yeah race doesn't matter. There is slight stat differences but it's only a couple points and those points probably make up less than 1 percent of your overall state total end game.

There's small differences in the races' stats that quickly become completely insignificant.

Choose your race based on their appearance/aesthetics.

For the starting class, it doesn't matter a whole lot since you can start changing to another one by like level 10 (hard for me to remember since I've played the same character for years and never made an alt). The main thing to consider would be that your starting class determines the city/area you start in. You start traveling around to the other cities around level 15 I believe but it can make a difference in how engaged you are to start.

Gladiator, pugilist, and thaumaturge start in Ul-dah (desert city)

Lancer, archer, and conjurer start in Gridania (forest city)

Marauder and arcanist start in Limsa Lominsa (port/island city)

So, I'd just pick based on the environment that sounds most agreeable to you since it's important to feel engaged in a game you're just starting. As I mentioned, by level 15 you can play any of the basic classes (those listed above, while rogue is available in Limsa Lominsa by level 10/15 but you can't start as one).

I'm still relatively new but as far as my friends tell me some particular races have stigma associated with them. I don't want to go into it in case they're talking out of their asses.

People make fun of Lalafells sometimes but it isn't like you'll get racist messages sent to you or anything.

I always /pet the Lalafells and think they're adorable (I play as an Elezen and think of them as fellow pointy ears if you want to be RP about it)

Also the Hrothgar have a reputation as the 'gay furry' race because you can only play as a male and their distinctly feline appearance.

Oh yeah, there actually are naming conventions that some of the races follow in-universe. Like Lalafells have, like, a repeating sound in their first and last names (ex: Tataru Taru, Teledji Adeledji, Nanamo Ul Namo, etc.), and Miqo'te usually have an apostrophe separating the first letter of their name from the rest (ex: Y'shtola, G'raha, M'naago, etc.). Meanwhile, Elezens all have French-sounding names like Louisoix or Laniatte, while Roegadyns are, like, Welsh or something, like Merlwyb and Bloefhiswyn.

This obv doesn't matter, since it's also something a new player wouldn't know, but if you want to sound "official" or whatever, there's that to keep in mind.

Is this explained/mentioned in-game or is it something players have come up with on their own?

It's just something you notice from NPCs names as you play.
