We DO need some sort of system to figure out who is best suited for which jobs (and even train some people appropriately if we can manage that). If the system is expensive, or racist, or not merit based etc (all of which it currently is) then it has problems, but the existence of such a system only makes sense. Nobody should look down on janitors/etc as implied in the Jefferson statement (although of course many do) but we DO need both janitors and engineers, and some people are better engineers than others. ...or do we not believe that anymore? Not everyone should go to college or be encouraged to do so if their record doesn't indicate that would be a good fit for them. If someone would want to go to college for the experience if they wouldn't qualify on pure merit, fine, but in my mind that's the kind of person that should be paying to go. ALL economic systems involve the hierarchical management of goods and services.
