Eldin is a cute little island, so it's small compared to real volcanoes (though they are all actually very cute). It is also a very intimidating volcano. There is only a small crater near the highest point, so I'd say it is not like a real volcano.

A real volcano has a large crater, so it can't really be compared to one from Skyward Sword, that would be a little unfair. However, there are numerous video games that use real-life locations (for example, some that use real volcanos include Mount Vesuvius in the game Shadow of the Colossus, and Fire Emblem: Awakening in the town of Val Albea). In the game Shadow of the Colossus, it is possible to see Mount Vesuvius from afar as you travel to the town. Mount Vesuvius itself does not appear in the game.

The town of Val Albea in the game Fire Emblem: Awakening uses real-life Val di Lecce. The Fire Emblem games generally use real-life locations. The town of Falkenberg in the game Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusades uses the city of Falkenberg (the location also appears in the game Empire at War, but only in the loading screen). The town of Solitude in the game The Last Remnant uses the town of Solitude, in Idaho.
