I played Suikoden 1 and 2 back to back in 2015

And I literally have no memory of it other than I loved it.

What do you mean? Yes there are attackers, range attackers, mages and all the sort.

The party has 2 rows, front and back. Character weapons have a range designation, S for short, M for medium and L for long. S weapons can only be used in the front row, while M and L weapons can be used in either row.

Does it say what range the weapon is somewhere?

Trying not to use a guide. Do certain characters just join the party for a little bit? I dont want to sharpen their weapons if theyre only gonna be around for half an hour.

You can check the profile to see if they are L, S or M. They also tell you what weapon they use so you can go from there.

I regularly put the strong tanks in front and magic, range in the back. Put Ted and Cleo in the back, put Pahn and Gremio in the front.

There are some yes but IMO, upgrading weapons isn't a huge deal until later in the game.

Ted and Phan are gone at this point. Does it say it in the strength menu? Im not seeing a range just the weapon and its sharpness

In the status menu for a character you should see at the bottom right if they are S L or M. Usually if they are L it means they are ranged. There are some exceptions, though.

Yep but making money is easy and you'll most likely find a team you like and invest in.

I think there are 3-4 recruits you can miss if you don't visit them before certain events but the rest can be recruited anytime
