Italian Americans still get a day of their own and Native Americans arent stuck with a day honoring a murdering maniac. Win-win.

Thats a cool idea, but it should be the Italians who decide which Italian to celebrate. It would be awkward for the rest of the world to dictate to the Italians which Italian theyre allowed to celebrate.

Here is a hot take, but.

way less people got mad over Columbus Day in the 80s or 70s or 50s.

he wasnt any less of a terrible person in those decades, and no new discoveries about his terrible-ness have been made since then.

the Columbus backlash is more about the same cultural forces that want a female 007 or a black Superman.

for them Americo Vespucci wont do.

the solution is probably to call the holiday encounter day or America (continent) day and move on.

No I wasnt. Thats a lie.
I love Native Americans, hate Christopher Columbus, and I hope Indigenous Peoples Day replaces Christopher Columbus Day.

white supremacists would balk at the thought of making a day to celebrate someone whose name so clearly denotes them as being foreign

"Vespa-what? why, that ain't MURICAN! unlike good ole Chris Columbus!"

sadly they got too much sway.

take Columbus for example. The guy wasnt even really Italian, he was from Genoa, which is part of Italy now, but it wasnt Italy back then.

he didnt discover America because he was a smart industrious Italian lad, he was trying to get to India and got lost and ended in America. He died convinced he got to India. BTW this is why people called native Americans Indians.

his supposed discovery wasnt a triumph of Italianity either, he embarked on his expedition in the name of the Kingdom of Spain, funded and supported by the Kingdom of Spain, and he came back to report to the king and queen of Spain.

but you cant have any mentions of Spain or the Spanish empire because Columbus Day is meant to give Italian-Americans a day, plus Spain pretty much means Mexico to the supremacists you mentioned above.

The preferred term by most is Indian not Native American fyi.

But I don't see what changing this does. Columbus never made it to America, so what does that have to do with here? Yes it's a holiday here, but he never killed or enslaved the people living in what would become America, so we have no actual reason to change it based on that.
