Current Events > Two classic jrpg series I'm gonna finally dive into: Suikoden and Star Ocean

Went and bought Suikoden 1-4 on PSN, and I started Star Ocean 1 on switch, but afterwards will get the others on PSN.

I always hear how great both of these seemingly defunct yet classic series are so Im excited to dive into them.

You need to get suikoden 5 too since it's the second best game in the series. First is suikoden 2 of course. No idea if it's on PSN though.

I've yet to start star ocean myself but always hear good things about the first two games.

Star Ocean 4 is very much slept on. The gameplay is very solid and fun.

Even the grinding is fun.

I couldn't get into suikoden unfortunately, the concept of collecting party members was just not my cup of tea. With star ocean even having to choose between 8 party members felt like too much of a hassle.

I enjoyed star ocean 1 and 2 for what they were back on the psp ports. Imagine the gameplay of tales of phantasia or tales of destiny in a vaguely scifi setting (that goes on to be not really scifi at all)

I'd say 2>1>5>3>>>>4

Star Ocean is a decent game, Star Ocean 2 is an all-time classic and one of the best aging PlayStation 1 games

Agreed, except the VO, that's classically bad.

I replayed Star Ocean 2 recently and hoo boy did I forget how ridiculously stupid the writing and characters were. That game is way more bizarre than I remember it being. But item creation nonsense is at its peak there.

Yeah I have to figure out a way to get Suikoden 5. Im suspecting I may have to get it the way I got SO2, which involves a home brewed psp

Suikoden 2 is one of the greatest games ever made. I don't think there's any "bad" Suikoden games, but quality and enjoyment dwindles between them. I agree with the fact that 5 is the second best.

I played the first 2 fairly recently and enjoyed my time with them. 2 is definitely one of the best JRPGs out there.

I'll need to try 3 and 5 one of these days. I hear 4 is the weakest.

4 is definitely the weak link but theres some pretty funny stuff there that almost makes it worth playing.
