In reference to a scene in a show that was funny because the character was throwing a hissy fit over an insult? I thought "famously" comedy gold would make better sense as the scene was known for its positive reaction from the audience? Help me out here guys.

What is the full sentence? You can X out proper nouns if you want.

(Famously likely is more appropriate, but their might be better wording still).

Not sure if you've seen the Sopranos, but there's a scene where the character suffering from early dementia (uncle Jun) repeats this line throughout the course of his dinner: "never had the makings of a varsity athlete." Tony (main character) not knowing Uncle Jun has early onset dementia, gets really upset because he feels like "never had the makings of a varsity athlete" was not a not nice thing to say and was undermining. Then Tony proceeds to throw an insane hissy fit and storms out of the house.

Ok but how are you looking to describe the scene?

"There is an infamously comedy gold scene from the sopranos...?"

It's a bit clunky wording tbqh. If that scene is well known and the reaction is negative but funny you could say something like "One infamous scene of comedy gold from the sopranos is..."

If it's in the context of discussion funny outrage

It would probably be more organic to say "one well known scene of outrage comedy gold comes from the sopranos"

But even more honestly "comedy gold" is a clunky phrase that wouldn't be too organic in many contexts.

If the choice is strictly between famous/infamous and it's not a scene that people at least roll their eyes at if not hate, then choose famous (or "well known"). If some people hate or deride that scene, or the outburst itself is quite negatively emotional, then you can call it infamous.

But in the latter context it would be the outburst and not the comedy gold that is infamous.

The original line was:

[ The line "never had the makings of a varsity athlete" was extremely underwhelming. I was really expecting to see a reaction from Tony, since that line was infamously comedy gold in the series, but sadly nothing with that scene in the movie was impactful. It felt forced and unnatural with Corey Stoll saying that line; it just wasn't as funny like with other characters. ]

Finding the right words to convey what you really mean is friggen difficult. I feel like I need to read a dictionary inorder to get better. I envy people that can speak so eloquently without any effort.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question btw. Good looking out.

Honestly I'm happy to talk further and answer more questions like this. I like very deliberately constructed language.

Because I guess I need to peel away from this. What topics might you be interested in?

Also, what do you think about the linguistic T/V distinction?

I don't know, most topics I guess, I enjoy healthy discussions particularly if it's with someone I have disagreements with where we can still maintain civility.

Forums full of drive by insults and stray comments often aren't the most fruitful place for constructive discussion.

I have no strong opinions on that, sorry. I'm familiar with it from my spanish class but yeah no real thoughts. Not really the part of language that interests me. Though I think one of the episodes of lexicon valley talks about formality conjugation in an interesting way. I'll try to look it up to see if there was a good trivia nugget from that.

I have no idea what you want to hear, but thanks

The idea that T/V has been removed from English sounds weird because you can still imply condescension
