I went back in May. Split hotel with one other person. Stayed about 4 nights in Honolulu. Did a bunch of tours and other activities. Total trip was about $2100

That was only my portion. Food was priced slightly higher then what I typically pay in Dallas. Virtually any tour and excursion was really expensive. Anywhere from $100-$175

I grew up there. It depends on what time of year you want to go. If the hotels are busy you won't be able to find any cheap rooms. And by cheap, I mean less than $500/night.

Things to do there are cheap for the most part. Beaches are all free. All the scenic viewing spots are free too. Tours and shows like the Polynesian cultural center and the luau at the Hale Koa are recommend, if you go to Oahu.
Oahu is the main island and is like a mini Los Angeles. If you want to go to a more scenic island I suggest the west coast of Maui, with a tour van to do the road to Hana. The Hana trip will take the whole day & the road is twisty, so disregard this advice if you get motion sick. Maui is also the starting point of a boat tour to Molokini. Where there's WORLD CLASS snorkeling.
If you want to see an active volcano, along with miles of barren lava fields, then the big island.
