Scaphism is the classic answer that seems to make the most sense.

You die from exposure while having you skin and GI tract tortured the entire time. The smells, forced posture and dehydration would really get to you.

Outside of some kind of prolonged specialty torture, i would go with that.

Flaying being number 2

There's a similar story about one of the guys impaled outside Vlad Tepes fortifications.

Came in to say that last one, scaphism

learned about it recently from Nightmare brewing, a metal brewery who makes beers inspired by torture methods. They have a beer called Scaphism

Its a stout with milk sugar, honey, with Tahitian vanilla and cacao beans

You can see an incident of Sawing in the European version of The Borgias. Which I think was just called Borgia. For some reason around rhe same time, 2 separate shows were made about the Borgia family. The showtime one and a Euro show but it was filmed in English. In the euro version, there is a scene where 2 men are being executed. You see one guy being sawed, and the 2nd man is watching and screaming in terror because he knows he is next

Scaphism probably wasn't actually a thing, IIRC: it's only mentioned in a few Greek sources, and it's supposedly something the Persians did: always a bad sign when one culture is describing the horrific things another (supposedly) does. Like primae noctae, which was always a thing the sick, twisted bastards a few counties over did.

Of course, stuff like hanging, drawing, and quartering, crucifixion, keelhauling, etc. are all things our ancestors actually did, so it isn't implausible either.
I think the weirdest is ponea cullei: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poena_cullei
It might be better than getting thrown to whatever starving animals the local arena had on hand, though.

Whichever ones take the longest, so probably scaphism followed by flaying and impaling/bamboo torture.

Surprised to see so many brazen bull votes. I think it's one of the quickest ones actually.

Iron maidens were never used, at least not in the context you think.

And yeah out side of that one Japanese guy who was kept alive for like 117 days and suffering from radiation poisoning, it's scaphism probably.
The incident in question: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokaimura_nuclear_accident

There's a video of it on youtube about it. I was going to post it but was afraid it will be a bit too NSFW. On the site, type up The Most Radioactive Man in History - Hisashi Ouchi.

Scaphism was also probably never used. However iron maidens if they were to be real would just be a shittier version of impaling.
