The exploration is fantastic, there's a great sense of awe or dread/shock when the game pulls some of its better moments at you. I jumped into the black hole when the sun was going supernova and teleported the farthest distance away and saw the universe turn to dust. Super cool, happened to be there at just the right time. Didn't progress anything, but it was fun to pull off. Stuff like that, the whirlpool planet etc are killer.

But the death loop is frighteningly short with how big some of the ruins are, especially the timed dungeons like the sand moon. I'm about five hours in and I've figured out the Interloper/Fire moon relationship and found 2/3 of the escape pods, on my next run I'll head down to the sunless city. But having to blow up and repeat every 22 minutes is just extremely frustrating.

I didn't have a problem with that at all. I knew exactly what I wanted to do each cycle and felt I had enough time to accomplish it.

I really love this game and consider it one of the best games ever.

Yeah I can understand the frustration of the cycles. I had that a bit going over Brittle Hollow.

You mean the accidental "self" ending you can get with the ATP or BH black holes? I already did that lol

Edit: Since I made this post I beat the game in about five hours total. Got the credits sequence and the full band to play at the end. It's a cool game, but landing on the Interloper and then the Sun Station because I wanted to challenge myself on first run was a bad, BAD idea for really engaging myself in the story. My in game experience was reading the ending first then had to double back on my own time to see wtf was going on lol

Don't be me, don't land on the Sun Station, Interloper or Twin Moons first.

some assorted things I found help with the time limit (you may know them already)

  • you can sleep at any campfire to fastforward time
  • you can save time&effort by not landing your ship neatly. most of the time you aren't ever going to go back in it that loop so as long as you don't die on impact it doesn't matter how destroyed the ship gets
  • somewhat spoilery? there's a guy on giant's deep you can talk to to learn how to instantly skip to the end of the loop from the pause screen, useful for when you're done with an area or stuck somewhere and just want to restart fast
