What they're saying: "I give you my words as chancellor of Kabul University," tweeted new Kabul University chancellor Mohammad Ashraf Ghairat. "As long as a real Islamic environment is not provided for all, women will not be allowed to come to universities or work. Islam first."
The big picture: The new government announced earlier this month that female students in Afghanistan can study at university, but classes must be segregated and head coverings are mandatory.

So that sucks, but it's not quite as awful as the title implies. Only almost as awful and liable to get worse.

what sort of person unironically thinks that the taliban are going to fight for decades to return to power, only to drop their core beliefs and the reason why they were fighting once they won. They fought so they could run Afghanistan like it was the year 1200 and to treat women and minorities as property

At best they'll dress up their behavior in Kabul, since they need international money, credibility and travel. But 80% of the country lives outside the cities so they'll really do there thing out there

If somebody's interested I can hunt down the BBC article, but one thing they learned from the last 20 years is the need for social media which was something they banned when they were last in power. Now they have entire studios filled with full-time employees whose only job is to spread propaganda on Twitter (partially because they're banned on Facebook). They learned that if you just put out a propaganda video and say the right things a lot of people will just shrug and go "who knows what the truth is" and let them get away with it.

When the Taliban says it means nobody has any rights(especially not women) except Taliban members and people who suck their dicks hard enough(mostly metaphorically but occasionally literally). Fun and culture of any kind is legally forbidden.

Half of the Taliban don't give a fuck about Islam and the other half buy the bullshit those ones spew or are operating on the same thought process that many people who join gangs do "If I join they won't hurt me or my family."

Makes sense.

For reasons I can't get into, I'm also aware they learned a lot from Al Qaeda's and ISIS use of social media. They were late to the game because AQ and ISIS had more Western born and tech savvy members. In the Islamic terror world, they're kind of the least tech and social media savvy, but they're learning.

We should have put together an all female Afghanistan army since they had zero reason to ever want to let the Taliban back in power.

Plus they couldnt possibly have done worse than the men.
