Found your problem. Should have went to a school that was more affordable for your situation.

Problem is, this isn't the cause, it's just a symptom. It's not really fair to blame some 17 year old with aspirations for falling victim to a predatory high interest loan to attend the thing that they've been conditioned to want to attend since basically middle school.

Kids are raised to be seen as failures if they don't go to college, when they are sometimes the farthest thing but.

And it's not like it's fair to blame the students too for the financial situation when these very pre-college schools themselves are too busy teaching calculus and physics instead of basic human finance.

It doesn't matter what's fair, if our parents didn't teach us correctly, like most of ours didn't, we suffer the consequences. Same with us to our children.

not really fair to blame
You don't have to be a genius to see how taking out a massive loan can bite you in the ass. While I do agree the system pushes you in a direction, when you're 17 you should also have at least a little bit of common sense at that point. YOLO'ing it and signing on the dotted line is as much the signer's fault as it is the system you described.

I'm not disputing that, I'm just saying, saying "fuck you you dumb fucking idiot why would you even remotely consider signing that loan" to a kid who has been groomed his whole life for that very moment is a little dismissive. Nobody is denying that these parents and the system carry blame as well.

I'm not saying there aren't 17 year olds out there who do understand the consequences, but it's understandable when they aren't able to fully grasp the big picture of the decision they just made when, again, they've been raised their whole lives for it.

Just pay off the absolute bare minimum of your student loans every month and hope that eventually your debt will be wiped out by the government. Another option is to win the lottery

Then we should have a publicly funded college option. Put that on a ballot and i'll vote for it.

It's still hard for me to feel the least bit sorry for people making bad decisions with student loans. More economically friendly schools exist, even if all you want to do is knock out your first few semesters there.

I joined a trade school. My wife went to an affordable college and has like 3k in loans left.

our collective income is over 200k.

its part parents need to educate their children more and also children just wanting to go to a school cause its expensive.

Yeah, a lot of people that age aren't in position to make those kinds of decisions at that age and are manipulated into feeling like they have no choice in those decisions. Even worse they may have issues with loneliness and depression with no real support at home. Having your self worth tied to a schooling while constantly struggling not fall to despair really sucks.
