I think I might have seen a radical vegan on reddit once or twice but that about it.

I took a bio ethics class ing high school for some reason and one day that had a famous vegan speaker come to our class. He just spent the entire period insulting people who eat meat and calling them pieces of shit. One girl tried to argue with him about her opinion and he made her cry and then she left the room. I think his name was Gary

A lot of them do come off the wrong way though, for sure.

I try to be as evidence-based as possible whenever someone asks me about nutrition, veganism, plant-based, etc.

Some aggressively vocal ones certainly do exist, but it's the ones who want to shit on vegans or go "WELL I'M GOING TO EAT A DELICIOUS MEATY BURGER NOW" at the mere hint of someone being vegan that I've seen more tbh.

There's an order of magnitude (minimum) more people talking shit about vegans than the other way around

Like for every 1 vegan calling people who eat meat murderers, there's 10+ (being generous, it's probably dozens if not 100+ lol) people going "I'll eat extra steak because of vegans"

My only interaction with the "extreme" vegan community was when I was into fitness YouTube, and people like Vegan Gains and Durian Rider would talk mad shit about body builder diets.

That led me into the vegan YouTube community. Turns out that, as a whole, the online vegan community is much more hostile to vegans that fail various purity tests that different vegan factions hold., or people who are formerly vegan that relaxed to vegetarianism or mostly plant based.

For all the shit you hear about people who eat meat, you might be surprised how much of that same energy is brought to people accidentally eat a piece of cheese, or eat honey on the basis that it's a symbiotic exception, or believe high amounts of palm oil are worse than trace amounts of traditional animal products due to its environmental impact on animal habitats. Lengthy, months long debates and call outs over various evidence based technicalities, calling out any inconsistencies in "what I ate today" from any points they made, the impact of organic vs. GMO, and so on. In some ways it's kind of amazing how in depth and nuanced these arguments are when the primary issue to tackle at large is still "is mass slaughter of animals for food bad when it's unnecessary?

activists are usually very aggressive, I'm not an activist, I just eat a whole food plant based diet because I think it's the best diet for optimal health

also as someone else says I think we see more people shitting on vegans than the other way around lol, guess they're just really insecure about themselves or something

well the ones you were talking about usually are, those who shame meat eaters by staying stuff like "YOU'RE A MURDERER"

honestly makes me think of some people on this board who talk this way about antivaxxers hahaha, the truth is actually quite a bit more nuanced than that

Yeah veganism is not just a diet. People do it for different reasons.

It's an entire lifestyle that, whether one is aware of it or not, addresses points of activism against several issues, such as climate change, animal rights and cruelty, GMOs and health, nutrition and the over-reliance of antibiotics that contributes to zoonotic disease.

They all kind of tie in together and mesh.
