I am a bourbon and whiskey drinker. I dont collect it. I try a lot of different ones and buy what I like.

For the most part you can get great bottles, all youll need for under $100 (actual MSRP, no secondary.)

The issue is on occasion you want something a little high end and you cant find if for less than 100x MSRP.

The people who but all this up dont drink it. Its a status symbol or an investment. So now I cant get this stuff in my lifetime basically.

Im not even talking about Pappy, Ive had every version aside from the 23 year. Its really good, its not my favorite and I wouldnt even pay MSRP for it.

Its much worse with other brands; for example Willett is off the charts right now. Their 8 year rye is going for $16,000 on the secondary market currently. Its out of control.

rant over

You should go somewhere that has flights so you can try a few to see the difference. You may just not like it but its probably the limited kinds you are trying too.

Im not a crazy whiskey drinker but do enjoy them and like trying different stuff. There is quite a variety and the taste changes a lot with a little water or ice. I want to enjoy it and enjoy it more with ice or a splash of water so that is what I do.

Your mouth needs to adjust to the higher alcohol content. Once it does, you'll taste the actual flavor. You can also put 2-3 drops of water and reduce the alcohol content a bit.

Try any whisky neat then with a couple drops of water. If you still dont like it use ice or in an old fashioned, you bought it so enjoy it. Dont listen to whiskey snobs who say it has to be one way.

Exactly. Also once you start being able to taste the flavors, don't worry too much when you can't taste the same tasting nodes as others. You'll see a bottle of whiskey described as tasting like bananas, chocolate, tobacco, and ginger. These descriptions are subjective.

This, I put 1 ice cube per finger of whiskey in the glass and it puts it right where I like it.

Don't just take shots.
That is part of where the burn comes from.
Smell it before you drink it, and let roll slowly in your mouth.

Alcohol as an investment is dumb. I mean it works from a financial standpoint for the seller but like, some rich person paying $10,000 for a bottle doesn't necessarily make it that special.

Sometimes you are paying a good deal for just the bottle itself...which out drink.

Then there is the whole Blanton's situation. Which was marketing genius.
~In case anyone doesn't know, they come with topper that all have horse's racing...but the trick is, each horse has a letter or a ' on it, spelling Blanton's...if you get them all you can send them in and they will send you back them on a display. If you do that, you've spent over $1,000's.

The Ateam, was Mohan's your go-to place?

Never been there. I've always been more of a beer drinker so I'd go to the local Hannaford in SGF or Anchor Beverage.

If I were getting liquor there were 2 places nearby, Tim's Liquor in SGF and Friendly Spirits near exit 17.

A year ago Blantons was at Costco, now its very difficult to find anything but the base version. Good thing its quite mediocre so it doesnt matter.

The Hannaford by ACC and Lowes I assume, that is actually a chill location. I'm surprised you didn't hit up Minougues as well.

And LOL, I totally forgot about Anchor Beverage!! Last I knew it is still there.
I think I went to Friendly's once, if it is the one I am thinking of..sorta just south of Hess.
My two stories about that would be, when I was a kid it was around that triangle turn my Grandfather commented on seeing a Breaklight in a re-view window for the first.
The second would be, when I was older actually went into the store, when I got my change, there was a coin that come completely obviously used as a Cap for Bowl. I joked with the clerk but I don't think he got it.

As for Mohan's my place is their closest competition, at least by volume.
((I use the term competition lightly. I really don't more with the volume we have.))~I don't have that corporate mindset. Give us profit sharing and I might.

recommend something under $100 for me to get after work today to have this weekend. I drink Basel Haydens as a go-to for something I like and am not a huge fan of rye.

Going to the WSOP next week so there is reason to relax at home this weekend.

What is really terrible has been the price increases and the declines in quality. Elijah Craig really dropped off after they removed the 12 year age statement. McKenna was amazing at $30 but now its hard to find for under $50. EH Taylor Small Batch was my favorite daily drinker but now its impossible to find.

I was particularly shocked to see what happened to EH Taylor. I used to get it at grocery stores now its fucking impossible to find.

I really hope this all blows over at some point and people move on to something else.

The price of most everything pisses me off now.

Lunchbox-sized bags of chips at the checkout counter now are like $1.80 when it used to be two for fifty cents. Houses that should cost $125k cost a half million. Gas is almost $4/gallon in my city. A coke at the checkout line is almost $2 now. College tuition will put you in debt for life. Medical bills will bankrupt you, even with insurance. Prescriptions are several hundreds of dollars without insurance. Transportation costs are obscene. Food prices are skyrocketing. Video games went up in price just because we could. People want $20 for a plain long-sleeve t-shirt. To rent a dilapidated house is like $1600/month.

Then stores wonder why people shoplift.

The burn at the back of your throat is the best part! If you want a good cheap whisky, get crown royal. My personal favourite everyday whisky, and it's $30 Canadian. That said, you might just not like whisky.

Good value for the money.
It is slightly smokey, but not a smoke bomb.
Certainly worth a try. It's a good introduction to smokey Scotches.

I do love my smokey Scotches though.

I forgot where you are now, but I know it's south...
So, it's hard to say what it costs there...there is a whole regional thing to this.

People come up from Kentucky and tell us certain things are inexpensive, while others are wildly expensive.
Personally, some prices are just stupid to me, I don't even care how good it is.
Maybe some of that has been around for Track Season people.

But like I said, a Redemption Rye for under $30 is perfectly fine.

There is a little chill in the air here, so I took a tiny swig of what I have left of a Knob Creek Smoked Maple Bourbon.

~My money is tight right now...which is my decision...so I'm jonesing of the cool bottles I've had around.

Let me know what you think about Monkey Shoulder.
It could be your entrance it to smokey Scotches IE, Lowland, or Islays.
If you like campfire smell you will love them.
