I think the problem there is the phrase "missing white woman syndrome" implies there is something wrong with caring in this case. the pathology is in not caring in other cases, not in caring in this case.

It's pretty shitty to look at a story about someone who's been murdered and your take is "nobody would care if they weren't white."

I think this is more of a gendered thing. When has a whole nation gone berserk over a missing man that wasn't a criminal? I think the more likely factor is she's a pretty, young woman and I guess it helps that she has a social media following.

But I totally agree we shouldn't obsess over a single missing person when there's many missing people. News just likes coverage I guess and what will gain a lot of views.

but the story smacks of a movie plot so it would likely be picked up regardless of her ethnicity simply because people eat that kind of dramatic crime mystery thriller stuff up.

i think a bigger criteria is that shes young and pretty.

if she was ugly no one would give a crap and it wouldnt make the news white or not.

a young hot photogenic black or Asian girl would likely make the news w this story too. An ugly white black asian or any chick would not.

Hundreds of indigenous women in Wyoming have been abducted and/or murdered without a trace over the last decade but they will never EVER get the coverage that this white girl did. Gabby's story is important and it's great that the power of social media led to her remains being found but if she was any color other than white no one would give a fuck
