FFXI was the last true MMO in my opinion.

Wow started to be that and then quickly shifted away and became a theme park MMO. Which just isnt the same. Playing a single player game amongst people isnt what MMOs are about.

It should be a world that feels inhabited by other players. FFXI felt like that in spades. Something very magical and rewarding about that game. The people you would meet. Makes me very nostalgic thinking about it.

I especially miss the jobs. FFXIV doesnt even come close to capturing the feeling of playing your favourite jobs.

Literally not even a proper FF.

One of my favourite moments were in Khazam, I was leveling my paladin, got into a full Japanese party, we played for hours, then couple of them stayed to help me grind the last level before I was capped for the area. It was also the last stuff I did in the game.

I was really at a bad server, it was mostly just Americans and Japanese, so my timezone was bad. And the only Eurpeans there was 2 linkshells, French and German and neither communicated in English.

tbh it was clunky and unintuitive as fuck, but was something you kind of really grew to appreciate once you understood it. pretty sure it took me like a fuckin hour to figure out how to get outside of san doria when i first started playing it at 15.

the pace of the game really meshed well with the controls, and being able to macro basically whatever you wanted was awesome. not many MMOs can be played one handed, and in an era before vent and other voice chat programs really caught on, having time to chat in between actions was nice

Some days I think about picking it up again but the time investment throws me off.

xiv is just some theme park bullshit now seen in every modern mmo ever. played since the alpha and my account is legacy, haven't played since the second round of eden raids tho.

game truly had potential in the early days. had all the weird charm xi did, and was stunningly gorgeous (game looked better 10 years ago than it does today), it just lacked content to back it up, and some unfortunate design choices regarding experience and currency (that were later ameliorated).

This game was basically my life in 04-05. I don't think there will ever be another game or another community quite like it. In those days, you needed other people to do pretty much everything. Unless you were a Beastmaster or just out farming for crystals or something, you really couldn't do anything solo. Plus there were no cross-server instances, so you had to be on your best behavior or your reputation would be tanked.

ffxi is/was a brutal game that i could never ever play again. i don't think a new game like that would survive today. i played it at the worst point in my life and pretty much no lifed it at the time. but it was probably the greatest game experience i ever had.

edit: going from a total newbie, to running into a more experienced player that showed me around, met other players with him, forming groups to do story/expansion missions (back when cop was hard), to beating cop with the same group, to doing dynamis/hnm/salvage/etc with the same core group of friends is indescribable.
