It was right around the time Matrix Reloaded came out and Pirates of the Caribbean also came out a few weeks later that the mass amount of hate was noticeable. At that time almost everyone was mad hating on Keanu saying he could not act worth a shit. At the time everyone was high on that Pirate shit and disliked The Matrix.

It's been a VERY long time ago, I doubt anyone actually remembers.

To be fair, complaints about Keanu's acting were prominent ever since Bram Stoker's Dracula.

I remember that people hated on his acting ability. But I think his humbleness won people over, and TBH, his acting improved a lot in John Wick.

It's really hard for people to simply admit "Yeah I use to hate this but now I like them". Instead people rather opt to act like they never hated something or someone. I dunno why but it's such a phenomenon to me.

This. I think the sad keanu meme and people learning about how much he does behind the scenes for cast and crew won everyone over. He's got that Brendan Fraser "everyone just wants you be happy" energy.

Yeah, he was really harshly disliked after the Matrix ended. He has a minimalist acting style, and he was mocked for essentially acting the same.

Public knowledge of his personal life turned things around

It was mostly men hating on him for being a 'pretty boy' who could land any tail he wanted. It was the same with Brad Pitt around that time; ironic-but-not-really manly-men pop culture outlets like Maxim magazine helped fuel this sentiment in the zeitgeist, even flat-out saying in one of their articles 'it's okay to like Seven, it's okay to like Fight Club, it's okay to like Snatch; it is not okay to like Brad Pitt.' It wasn't until the mid-2000's at least that guys were 'allowed' to like these two actors.

I never hated Keanu or his acting, but I did hate Leo. Simply because the only thing I had ever seen him in was Titanic and that came out at a time where I was super "edgy." But after I saw him in something else I realized, shit this mother fucker is great.

TBF Leo's acting was pretty bad early in his career as well. He was awful in Man in The Iron Mask.

Yep, I'm one of those people. He was garbage in Dracula & several other things. Now that he mostly sticks to fun action movies, it doesn't particularly matter.

I've heard a lot of jokes about his acting, but nothing that seemed like real hatred. To be fair, it's really not the kind of thing I commit to memory.

TC, the people who don't know that were probably 5-6 around that time, meaning they'd be in their early-/mid-20s by now, which is why you don't see many people remembering that anymore.

I don't think anybody really hated him for his lack of range. Cause in action movies, he was good.

And now He's pretty much type casted to action movies for the rest of his life, which don't require quality acting, which is fine.

He was actually pretty good in the most recent bill and Ted movie though.

Yeah, he was basically treated as punchline his entire career between the Matrix sequels and John Wick

Yeah, they made fun of him, but even besides that, after Constantine, his career was basically done.

The meme stuff happened, which flipped things around and he started gaining a cult following. Even when John Wick first came out, it was his fans that were watching it and then putting everybody else on to it.

DiCaprio was hated just because he was in Titanic. Nobody cared about him personally when he was in Growing Pains or even Romeo & Juliet. When he hit the ceiling in popularity, obviously a bunch of haters came out.

After the 2nd Matrix movie and up to John Wick he was hated for his lack of range then people learned all the good stuff he did behind the scenes and they were ashamed to hate him.

Keanu fans who stuck with him promoted a lot of the behind the scenes stuff and spread the word that John Wick was great.

Leo was only hated for Titanic and for being a pretty boy before he took non romantic roles. Dude was not given a chance to really show his range before Catch me if you can, and Gangs of New York.
