1. the west stopped producing boy bands so kpop is filling that niche
2. they are extremely heavily marketed in under-served regions like south america, southeast asia, etc. all those social media profiles you see where every single pic/tweet is either a kpop boy, or freaking out about a kpop boy? it's only 20% fat white chicks, the other 80% is self-hating teen girls from hispanic countries and indonesia and stuff

I mean, it's not like K-pop blew up after NSYNC and Backstreet Boys disappeared in the 2000s. And One Direction was really the only boy group in the 2010s.
