You need to have the passion and the realization that there aren't a lot of job opportunities for being a professor in that field. You will definitely need a doctorate and do field work relying on grants in mean time.

I don't recommend it. I work in a stem field but I got a bachelors in a liberal arts field.

I know a lot of liberal arts majors that ended up using their degree to get desk jobs at tech companies. Which its more sad to me that a talented theatre major ended up doing data analytics for Amazon than following their passion but such is life.

For any job you need basic social skills.

Also, job market is more competitive than ever. They should try and do an internship for experience. They would be at an advantage vs other candidates

But this topic is about remaining in academia for life. Like homework, exams, and grades are so important in academia but much less important (or much different) in the labor force and when you retire.
