Do you take meds for mental health?

I'm currently on an antidepressant and it's worked wonders over the past year or so.

I've been on the same drug since 2014. When I'm doing well: "so the drug seems to be working"

Are you skeptical about how effective it might be?

No. I do think it would it would be nice if I could have some weed to get away from all those thoughts that cause me pain, but it's not legal here.

Well. No, not really. But it doesn't always keep me out of the hospital. And they won't let me get off it, or get really combatative and try to shut the discussion down

It doesn't help that I smoke pot, duh, and when I was clean for 2 years I was working the whole time and didn't have to go to the hospital. But that just seems to indicate weed withdrawals cause... this state

No. My mom and brother are though. My mom takes antidepressants and tranquilizers. My brother is on something for some anxiety. I've had brief struggles with anxiety, but was able to overcome without meds.

Fair assessment, usually these meds are pretty low risk for taking long term at least. I've kind of accepted that I'll be on mine for the rest of my life and I'm okay with that given the side effects are somewhat minor. I think it also helped that my psychiatrist agreed to get me on the lowest therapeutic dose as a starter.

I'm pretty much still on the fence about weed. I think previous experience tells me it has little impact either way on my mental health.

That's good, did you ever speak with a therapist about your anxiety?

I did not. With help from my brother, I was able to figure out what my trigger was and adjust accordingly.

Weed didn't impact my mental health for a few years until it did. But psychosis, to my knowledge, happens to men when they are younger, so you might not have that specific thing to worry about.

As of today, I do now for my ADD. Only took one dose out of two but I notice a difference. Going to cut the dose in half and see how it affects me.

I'm afraid.. Not so much addiction, but having to rely on it. I hope the good habits that I can form I can keep without using it. I know I'll have to work extra hard.

Ya. Kind of would like to get off them. The whole no major studies on long term usage thing. I feel like I've become more stupid since I started taking them a few years ago. Memory problems, can't speak and think as coherently, etc.

I used to take stimulants for ADD but they were causing all sorts of problems with my life, addiction being the least of which.

Caffeine allows me to be functional at least but is also a double edge if I'm not careful.

I'm already medicated for psychosis. I just didn't really drop that in the OP I guess. Some people here could be surprised I suppose. I started having auditory hallucinations a few years ago and the medicine I'm on has eliminated them entirely thankfully.

Unfortunately I think there's a bit more stigma around it as opposed to just having depression and anxiety, which I've also been diagnosed with.

What conditions are you medicated for if you don't mind me asking? Maybe they could step down your dosage some to see if the side effects would subside some. Therapy has helped me immensely for both my depression and anxiety.

MDD and anxiety

I don't know if you've tried a therapist before but I've found my current one has been great for both of those things. She uses cognitive behavioral therapy mainly to treat people and it's been pretty eye opening exploring how my inner thoughts and assumptions drive my anxiety in particular. Hopefully you can figure something out though, I would be concerned if I felt my cognitive capacity was declining in any way due to medication for sure.

I have a friend with it, she basically has had a hell of a time finding a medication that will work for her. She told me a ton of horror stories about some of her previous meds, seems like a good solution is hard to come by.

All good. I'm not really sure why I didn't mention it, it's inconsequential now that I have zero symptoms of it these days and it's just GameFAQs at the end of the day. I have told the people in my life that I care about so it isn't super high stakes or anything lol. Thanks for being amicable though.

Everybody's brain chemistry is different so it makes sense. I currently work with addicts in rehabilitation and it's not super surprising to find that many methamphetamine users also have some form of ADD or mental ilness.

The line between treatment and dependency can become incredibly thin.

She had been taking Vyvanse and I guess it left her with bruises all over her body so she had to get off of it. I don't really understand how a med could do that, tbh.

Keep fighting the good fight though, sounds like you're helping a lot of people in your line of work. In the past I had been given a highly addictive benzo for my anxiety. Ultimately I'm glad I got away from it and onto something with less risk of turning me into an addict.
