I haven't posted anything in a while, so I thought I'd pose my latest WIP. It's uh, nowhere near done, but I'm trying some radically different style than what I normally make. This is my newest D&D character, a Gnome Circle of Spores Druid.

I like this so far. It looks different than your normal style in a great way.

I'm changing my watermark for my stuff to separate my webcomic art from my normal stuff for inktober.

So these are the first 2 of the assignments of this week. I really hate the cave, it's really just bad. It stonewalled my progress, and the result is nothing pretty. I ended up giving up, which is pretty evident. I put the 2nd twice, because my sense of scale is bad. Probably 2 would be fine if I lowered the character so they're only shoulder length, but I think 2a is more correct as is.

Not particularly happy with either assignment, relative to the example image that was shown. 2/2a seems much better, but that's mostly because the cave is just brutal. With too little detail, it looks like a blob, but with too much, it looks wretched, and I don't know how to best balance it. Probably I could have made the initial rocky wall lines thinner, and just made more of them, so I wouldn't have felt need for all those small cracks that don't belong or weren't implemented well. I ended up hardly focusing on the lighting aspect, because I was afraid if I did so, it would go back into blob form, because I wasn't good enough at showing the depth of the image.

2/2a, again, feels better, but I also feel like I'm not really maximizing the coloring and lighting aspects of the assignment. I tried to make the lighting look relatively correct, but that's about all I did. I ended up focusing more on trying to make sure you could distinguish the tree from the grass, which I hopefully mostly succeeded at. As it is, I'm pretty meh on both, maybe the third will strike the required balance.

I'm really a bit aggravated about these. I felt previously like I was sorta able to handle the assignments, but now it feels like my lack of previous art skill is catching up to me. One more left to try.

It looks like you put a lot of effort in your work and it shows. Don't be too hard on yourself, it looks really good from what I see.

Quick question for those who draw on physical paper. What type of pencil do you use when sketching and what time of pen for inking? I might want to upgrade what I currently have.

When I draw personally, I just use a regular number 2 pencil usually, and a basic ballpoint pen, except for that one time I posted my hand drawing. But since I'm mostly digital, that doesn't really help you >_>.

Assignment #3, I'm late but it doesn't matter too much. I feel like there are points that just aren't done well. This image is supposed to be really small, in order to prevent us from rendering too much needlessly, but as you'll see in the imgur, there's a reason I'm so tilted. I suppose the one doing the example is a professional, but it bugs me just how ugly my stuff is in comparison, and I have nothing to compare it to except that. For this one, again, some bits are kinda ugly blurry, but it could be worse.

Im loving these dark images! Maybe I should shift to dark things as well. I tried to draw a reaper but my lack of knowledge on how to draw the material on its cloth messed it up. I'll try again soon since that was a while ago.

This is the week 6 assignment, just one painting of a character using one of the techniques spoken of during the thing. This one is a character exposed to the dark. Similar to the High Key / Low Key Stuff from some weeks ago, this time in color. An environment was also something I could have done, and I could have used atmospheric perspective or depth of field instead, but I felt this was easier to do and make look decent. Although, considering my dissatisfaction with last week's stuff, perhaps I should have spent time on an environment, it's clear rough for me.

This is the example image given. Obviously better than what I have, but I'm also focusing on the mangalike style, so all the detail there would be out of place. Although perhaps that just means I should have tried something different/harder for me. What was hard was the fact that the example didn't have any hair, so my nemesis came back. It's also why I didn't fuss too much about the clothing, cause I didn't feel the example did either. Though I suppose that just means I was being a bit lazy in total.

Well I just had my tablet pen wear out. Fortunately the tablet itself didn't scratch too easily. And if things go well, the replacement nibs will be in on Sunday. Unfortunate thing to happen, but it should be alright.

Not likely to need to upgrade ever, unless my skills seriously level up, so it might be cheaper in the long run. Also someone pointed out to me it comes with replacements >_>. Oh well, I bought other stuff I needed with them anyway.

Here's a "study" I did. I hesitate to really call it that, because I feel like after a point I was just trying to get it done, rather than really do it right. It was an attempt at a 1:1 copy, but some bits were hard to decipher, and I also just ended up rushing out of exhaustion with it. It's not "complex", but there's enough to really wear me out. Which is a flaw I have, getting easily discouraged and looking for quick outs.

This is a concept of a concept piece. As in, I might not even use this for the final product at all, I'm meant to make 5 thumbnails, and this thumbnail isn't even finished. This is just the first of something that almost looks right, though there is a lot off, I think the idea comes through, at least.

Thank you! I'm not 100% done yet. I think I'm going to go back and give her a little thicker outline and add some light to the hair going over the left side of her face so that her head doesn't look like it's shaped weird.
