I remember the MC would do someone else's homework or someone would do his homework, or some shit

Still legit one of the worse books I have ever read, imo.

Really did not like it and just found it a chore to get through.

I think anyone could probably slap their life story in the book and the cover would still read The Catcher In The Rye tbh

Tietam Brown hits mostly the same points, mostly better, and it's way more fucked up about it.

This. People love to pry symbolism. When it was just a whiny kid whining the whole time. I could see why it was bigger when it came out but its aged like milk.

Strange how it isn't more popular with the self-entitled youtube generation.

But yeah, my reaction when I read it in the late 80s or early 90s was "I don't get it. This guy's a bit of an ass, and not the fun kind."

Lol I didnt know Mick Foley even wrote books, looks cool tbh

The real power of a book like this though is that it shortens the distance between ourselves and the character, a book featuring the KKK is gonna have people running to the hills first before they come around

Thats just what I read on the wiki anyways

Its barely symbolic - the whole book is pretty laid out and bare bones to the point the only thing youre ever noticing is how much Holden is a whiney brat who you continually try to pick on not knowing parts of you IS the way he acts

Its like if Norm MacDonald wrote a book with a punchline that you expected the whole time and you say haha I knew that and hes laughing at you the entire time for getting the one up on you while youre wondering why hes laughing the entire time hes telling you the joke

Seemingly trifle matters of adolescence/getting yourself involved in life schpiels and complaining that something else is the problem but not you because you feel you already understand that at this age it's all on you and you understand the clauses of personal responsibility to grow and understand others

The books relevancy is in the fact that it questions how good of a job you are actually doing with all of this long after you read the book and considering J.D Salinger makes the vehicle a 16 year old and writes the story as a person of age with perspective later in life, I definitely feel it's themes are applicable no matter what age

I read it when I was like 22 or 23. Wasn't a bad book or anything but I didn't find any deeper existential meaning to it personally.

I read it purely for fun (never had it assigned during my years of schooling) during my second year of community college and absolutely adored it. Funny how I see almost everyone absolutely lay into it every time it gets brought up.

It has a good meaning but its just a chore really. Reminds me of spec ops

Dogshit gameplay meant to emphasis the themes but at the end of the game its not fun to play

I don't remember much of it, read it in high school, but I actually remember it being a quick read, not a chore. I did like it a lot at the time, I recall.

I've read Catcher in the Rye twice. Once in high school and once in college, probably about 7 years apart. I hated it the first time. I still didn't like it the second time, but I could understand it's literally significance though.
