Alright sure he's a colossal bell end

And he definitely does some...quirky things, not always in a good way

But how many drummers have such a distinct sound? 4 bars of lars ulrich is not just a sound you recognise - it's an iconic sound of the era. Nobody else drums like that.

I really don't think his drumming deserves the meme status it gets, tbh.

Honourable mention to Ringo Starr, btw. Another one of the greats of all time.

He's pretty good. He's not Neil Peart or Bill Ward or Keith Moon, but he's pretty good. Don't know why some people act like he always sucked. Also: He left the fockin band!? Period! Exclamation point!

Ringo is pretty underrated and gets so much undeserved crap.

He literally did not know how to play drums when they recorded their first album

Ringo isn't even the best drummer in The Beatles.

The main criticism for him is that his drumming was too simple/basic and a reflection of his lack of ability, especially when you compare him to the rest of the band as well as other thrash drummers of the era. You can try argue that his drumming was a distinct sound but the fact is he was incapable of anything more.

Alright but how many artists learn the craft (whatever medium) and then end up reverting to a style that mimics not even being able to do it at all

Picasso hated the fact that he had a classical education in painting

I realise this sounds like shitposting at this point but I think Lars' weird style has artistic merit beyond whatever technical problems

Wasn't Lars responsible for the trash can drum sound from St. Anger? He's done more harm than good

I watch probably more drumming community videos than any person should and I don't think it's so clear cut. When you move past the memes you get some content like this:

Whether accidental or not I fucking love this shit. So many examples of Lars' drumming being like this. Jazz drummers go through a decade at berkeley to learn the shit lars did by accident, lmao

Having an iconic sound doesn't necessarily mean you're a great musician imo.

Like he wouldn't get a gig as a fill in for any other band becuase he simply couldn't play it but I dunno, I love the Lars sound. I think it's unique, and where so many metal drummers try to sound like each other, and there's this one weird dude who's just on his own plain, accidentally or not. I love that.

By my definition that is basically textbook definition of great. Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, BILLY CORGAN - when you think of these singers do you assess their vibrato control or clarity of intonation?

I'll fucking die on this hill, lmao

I guess he fucks up a lot, he's sloppy, he makes lots of rookie novice errors - in the sense that if you were a beginner drummer people would stop you and attempt to correct your bad technique. I mean he straight up speeds up, slows down, has shitty timing, and does weird things by accident rather than out of some jazzy sense of a drunk beat -

I think the biggest factor though is he's just a colossal asshole. But all this aside I can still recognise his drumming after 4 bars and so I'm saying he's great.

I feel like Billy Corgan is the perfect example of having an iconic voice yet still being a bad singer lol most Pumpkin fans would agree with that notion too.

Would you consider Kurt Cobain an iconic guitar player? How about a great guitar player?

Guess I don't have an ear for drums or I just pay more attention to the guitars. I never really have noticed it. I have noticed he's a huge asshole though. I don't know how the other band members stand him.

This just becomes a semantical argument about what "great" means. If you were asking me do i think any of these people are technically proficient, well rounded, could play anything else competently - no. Do I think they created a sound so unlike anything else that it's inimitable? Yes. What even is art anyway?

I think that's how I would classify great. Chops are a tool to create art. That's why I think Kurt Cobain is a better guitarist than yngwie malmsteen.

It's a difference of definition.

The Princess Bride is my favorite movie because it's fucking flawless.

Arena (Sam Jackson kidnaps Kellan Lutz and forces him into an underground internet death fight ring) is also a great movie, but because it's absolute shit yet I love it anyway.
