It doesn't get overtly serious like SA2 and Shadow, but it also doesn't get super light-hearted that it feels like you're playing a game strictly for kids. You had to piece everything together a little bit by gathering stuff from the various guides and other scattered materials like obscure snippets of text. If you hadnt played all of the games in the series, it was obviously impossible to keep track of everything too.
