A lot of them also fall farther off the dog tree, for example pekis are commonly said to be the most closely related to wolves of dog breeds; this can make training a more difficult exercise. Pits are generally quite smart and quick to learn. They're used as drug dogs as well these days. Years of being used as 'security' and fighting dogs, as well as being particularly lethal, has given them a bad reputation. My pit mix has been the easiest to train though, he's eager to please and learn. He's good with small dogs and lady dogs.
