Bob Kane: "I'm going to make my own version of Zorro. We'll call him Batman."
Bill Finger: "Let's do something a little bit different..."

Stan Lee: "I'm going to make my own version of The Spider. We'll call him Spider-Man."
Steve Ditko: "Let's do something a little bit different..."

In both cases, the original idea was more or less to copy a preexisting hero before a second writer stepped in and fleshed the character out to be something unique. In both cases, people would later argue over who actually created the character with it commonly being agreed that the one who fleshed the character out is the unsung hero robbed of his credit.

Oh, and in a roundabout way, both were heavily influenced by The Shadow. Batman borrowed stories from the The Shadow. Whereas Spider-Man drew from The Spider; an alternate version of The Shadow who faced smear campaigns from the police while battling The Octopus.
