If this canal is the literal key to worldwide import/export, why dont they invest the time and money into digging another one next to it?

Apparently, the new purpose of the Suez is to draw international attention to the terrible names given to cargo vessels.

Seriously. Is there a reason it needs to be so damn narrow if it's such an important route?

Sure, that should be cheap, easy and in no way involve closing down a vital international trade route for years.

Blatant lies and sarcasm, probably an unnecessary note, but some are occasionally hard of thinking.

It's 673 feet wide, with a maximum allowed beam (ship width) of 254 feet wide. The problem is those ships can be much longer than they are wide.

I can't understand why they don't have a tug fleet to assist ships that are in distress (loss of power, navigational failure, etc).

It's how it was originally built, see also the Panama canal, or the gauges of many national rail networks.

The issue is, these things were built quite a while back, when ships, trains etc were smaller. It's not just the channel or track, it's every bridge, tunnel, lock, cutting etc. along the way.

Essentially, widening a canal will cost almost the same as building it in the first place.

It would actually cost more because of inflation over 100 years.

I was thinking in real terms, but I don't dispute your point.

Plus, the cost to trade revenue due to closing these routes for years of course.

Because building a fleet of ships that might get used once or twice a year isn't profitable.

From the article:

The canal authority is working on a multi-billion dollar project to widen sections of the canal in the hope that it can prevent large ships becoming blocked again.

Um... the canals are already where they need to be?

Suez to avoid going around Africa, Panama for South America.
They were hugely impressive engineering achievements for their day.

It's also a diplomatic challenge naturally, this isn't the 19th century anymore. The Royal Navy won't send in a gunboat because the natives object to you digging thorough their country these days ;)

We are, by pumping trillions of tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. Soon enough cargo ships will be navigating an ice free artic.

But it's CE chap, can't be bothered to think that hard ;)

Doubt it, Suez is tricky, but getting your ship stuck is not something any Captain or crew wants on their record.
