They both suck but battle passes show you your progress of stuff you could have if you paid the $10-$20 for the battle pass. You're level 20 in the battle pass and you could have all this cool pointless shit you technically earned but only if you cough up some money to unlock it. Dunno why that is more enticing to me. It's basically just the same shit but you see it now on a fishing line.

I still have yet to buy into one but I often check them out while playing. The biggest deterrent for me (other than it being pointless shit) is that you have to buy some in-game currency to use to buy the battle pass in most games. Fuck that lol

Apex Legends gives you enough paid currency to unlock the next season's battle pass and a little extra. So I bought it when the game came out, cost me $10 and it has been well worth it.

I dunno how the currency packs end up working out half the time. I look at the page for the currency and my brain stops working. Kinda helps me to not spend money on it lmao

I might actually look into it for Splitgate tho. I'll probably end up pulling the trigger on that games battle pass cuz I'm having a lot of fun and it's free. The rewards for it kinda look meh tho outside of weapon skins.

This topic is basically me talking myself into/out of buying this battle pass btw.

The biggest issue I got with the battle pass system is the fact that if you don't get it, it's gone forever. If they fix that, I wouldn't really complain on it BUT they won't as that fear of missing out is exactly what they are trying to use to lure people into buying them and the ability to skip the tiers rather then grind.

In theory I like that a lot of JP games that are in the west bring their pity system for loot boxes. You know, every 100 pulls you get one of the advertised 5* characters or weapons. Or with Final Fantasy Record Keeper, you're guaranteed a 5* with every 11x pull, and it's like 99% of the time something on the banner. Or certain ones where if you pull on them you're guaranteed 2 6* items. Or the money only ones where you pull, then can pick something from the list of items in the pool from banners before a certain point. Or if you pull enough times on a banner you get to pick a 7* item.

But then, this is a great way to justify lowering rates. Especially since in FFRK, they never list the actual rates. And in the West especially, there's data collected every banner to figure out the true rates of things. 300 people doing 1000+ of the 11x pulls between everyone, etc. Sometimes the really good thing that caused power creep in JP has a noticeably lower rate than the other things of the same rarity level. Or some banners that swap things out for junk, killing the banner in the process. Oh, and global rates are definitely, 100% for sure lower than in JP.

Basically, unless they list the actual rates and the numbers match up with an expected margin of error? The pity systems just let them get away with making rates garbage enough that to get what you want you either need to whale, dolphin important banners, or pay attention to JP and save for key banners plus the occasional catch up type ones. If you don't browse forums for that, you're SOL.

Meanwhile battle passes tend to be cruddy because items you get paying money are decent or good but the free ones you get are cruddy. And I've seen games where they had season rewards for rising in rank playing enough. But then some of those turned those into premium pass stuff and now you actually get worse items overall compared to the first few seasons when it was free.

tl;dr I hate the bait and switch companies pull with money locked content

That annoyed me about Mass Effect 2 and 3 for YEARS.

I didn't preorder or I didn't at some specific place so this content is gone forever.

Until the LE came out and I got to fall in love with the Crusader.
