The wife and I are trying for a child and looking at daycares, costs are absolutely insane. I don't know how most people can afford daycare for 1, 2, or even 3 children on an average middle class American salary.

We may even be considering bringing a family member to live with us to act as nanny when we need one.

What were your average monthly daycare costs? Are there hidden costs besides the daycare "tuition"?

So do you pay your mom $400 a month to watch your toddler or is that just how much expenses are for the toddler while under her care?

I actually had the conversation with one of the women at work
her husband literally left a job at pay cut of about 20k because it was cheaper overall to have him at home and being able to take care of the two young kids instead of day care.

That's pretty reasonable and sounds like a win-win.

It seems that overall people can really only make children work if they're poor enough to get free daycare from the state or if they have extended family available.

That's what worries me, that it might be more financially beneficial for one of us to quit our jobs and be a stay-at-home parent. We are just both at a great point in our careers and quitting would derail that. It's one of the reasons we waited so long to have a child and it may be enough of a reason to wait a little longer.

$2700/month for my kid

Leaning on extended family seems like the best route if its an option

Otherwise idk, we make good money so we didnt have to think too hard
But im guessing "make more money" isnt helpful advice

My wife's earnings were pretty low, so now she's doing the SAHM thing. When we move to Vegas to be closer to MiL, hopefully she can help for cheap like Weezy above

My daugther just turned 1 and my MIL has been looking over her for the past 8 months along with my wife who is WFH. She takes her back to her place 3 hours away every now and then for a week or two and we go back for a weekend. But she also has 3 other grandkids from her older daugther but they are all teens now so its easier. My parents are in the process of selling their place in NYC and buying a condo around our area in LA so they can take care of my daugther and also any future kids we will have. So will help them with their mortgage which is still a lot cheaper than daycare.

A nice suburb within commuting distance of nyc

Its a really good daycare in a nice area along a common commuting path. Has some certifications that are i guess not easy to get. We love it

Tbh i would never pay for private high school
But early education is just so bonkers important that id rather err on the side of paying too much

If i could SAHD him tho i would

When we had my first child 8 years ago, my wife was working and she was considering daycare centers. She visited something like 4-5. The price was absurd. It was something like 500 a week.

We came to the conclusion 75% of her pay would go to daycares to have some other person raise our child from 7-5 every day. So she became a stay at home Mom and we started a dog watching business instead.

we pay like $900 a month for one kid to go to daycare for 3 days a week, with the grandparents watching her the other 2 days. we have another baby due in january so effectively that $900 will be doubled once baby #2 is old enough to send to daycare & my wife is back to work.

we looked into the options and we did not really have any choice other than daycare. the grandparents still work so they cant babysit full time and it didnt make sense for my wife to quit her job since she gets a decent salary & quitting the workforce would set her back when she is ready to re-enter.

as for how people afford it, i think a lot of people are just resigned to being daycare-poor for a few years until they can send their kids to pre-k. sucks but you gotta do what you gotta do. with daycare at least there is an end in sight and the prices drop a little bit as the kids get older
