I have a project at work to replace core switches for a huge warehouse while the warehouse is running. It essentially has to be done in multiple steps during a bunch of time frames that the warehouse is OK with.
  • Connect new core switches to old core switches: Done
  • Configure new core switches so that they're ready to act as the new cores: Done
  • Move access switches over to the new core switches with minimal downtime (less than 10 seconds): In progress

We've done about 7 of them with no problem. Then we got to this 8th one. The basic process is to disconnect the 2nd uplink, connect it to the new core switches, let the 2nd uplink come up, then disconnect the 1st one and move that one over.

For some reason, when we connected the 2nd uplink on the one we just did, the switch went down.

Me: Shit shit shit shit shit *it gets plugged back in to restore connectivity*

We had a group of network guys on the conference call trying to figure out what went wrong. The config looked correct, so no one could identify anything. We just decided to rip the bandaid off and move the switch over any way.

The 2nd time, it worked as planned with no config changes.

Damn it
