There's your problem.

Cask strength is the best. Check out some Elijah Craig or Larceny Barrel Proof, if you can, TC.

No, only scotch has a Smokey flavor and thats from the peat fire thats used to dry the barley.

When whiskey ages it pulls flavor compounds out of the wood the char on the barrels isnt enough to give it a Smokey flavor.

Shitty whiskey tastes like alcohol only with a little flavor. It is usually smooth. Most Canadian whiskeys are shit, theyre just smooth.

Good whiskey you are always going to get vanilla, oak and spice flavors. Great whiskey you start to pick up on floral and fruit flavors.

Pretty good being around $35 when compared to the usual $100 a bottle stuff I had.

I recommend Jameson Black Barrel. Never had it but since it's one of the brands my company owns I'll plug it.

What company?
It's not Diageo is it?

Jamo, is pretty basic, but I have tried Jameson Stout Edition and it's pretty good.

Also, TC what do you do. I am assuming these tastings are work-related.

Pernod Ricard. I manage the field P&L for some of the states. My sense is that caskmates and stout will go the way of the dinosaur. Jameson Orange is supposedly the next big thing.

Ahh, I agree, I don't see it sticking around, but it is surprisingly good.
I haven't tried the IPA one...I would try it, but I wouldn't buy it.

I actually passed a tasting of the full Del Maguey line up yesterday, just because my stomach wasn't feeling it. ((Instead, I hung around the Black Button Distillery table))
You don't have many wines though I noticed.

Side note: I am actually pretty good friends with someone very high up in Marketing for Gallo. I can straight up message her about certain aspects of their marketing.
((Such as the summer Ecco Domani lables, which she doesn't deal with anymore...but got started.))

Yeah, no our wines and champagnes are lacking. It's like 5% of our revenue and the only biggish names are Mumm and Perrier Jouet. All the wines are super small. I think once Yellowtail came around the race to the bottom crushed them.

DM is like their prized little brand they hope to grow. Haven't checked it lately but I'd assume they're throwing a lot of money for tastings, etc at it. And then their big bet for the year is the DM muertos subbrand.

Ya, all of your wines seem to be in short supply, that is one thing I've noticed. Same with Mumm.
Brancott sells, but Matua or Kono sell way faster. Kim Crawford is w/e.

And ya, they certainly had some expensive tastings with the DM. I think some of the bottles were $100+

I do like the name Flight Song though!
Honestly, I don't have a favorite Sauvignon Blanc.

In whites, I'm mainly Reisling and Gewrztraminer.

My wife's go to is Riesling Relax. And yeah, those DMs are a little pricey. They're definitely considering dropping the price what with all those crappy little off-prem stores with limited space that don't want to carry expensive items that don't turn fast enough.

I work at a huge store...it's not the biggest in the region, but it is a contender.
We do have buying power though. Which would probably explain such a tasting.

I haven't tried Relax, but I am going to assume it is a bit sweet.
Off dries are more my thing, Clean Slate fits that bill for under $10.

I'm in Upstate NY for the record. But actual upstate, not 'just north of the city' upstate.

Never tried Relax, but yeah I imagine it's sweet. I think the Pernod definition is anything past Westchester. If you're one of the bigger ones I imagine someone popped up in person to tell you to stock up ahead of the Absolut $1 price increase. Not telling just runs the risk of pissing people off and losing more facings to Tito's.

I'm above Albany...I suppose you are East Cost then?

And ya, Tito's flys...which is kinda silly, being just Vodka.
I don't know about that price increase.
I wonder who distributes your stuff up here, that is the question.

Yep, on the east coast. All of NY for Pernod goes through Southern Glazer. Something like 20-25 states are all Southern. It's very annoying how there's such large differences from state to state with local laws that necessitate different pricing strategies. For reference, before this place I was at a very large CPG and we never bothered to consider how to run things in NY vs CA vs WY. It was all the same strategy.

Ahhh, so you are with Southern. I gotta find out who your rep is.

Bourbon is a goldmine for good, cheap, strong mixed drinks. But personally, I find anything over 100 proof to be somewhat off-putting for my purposes. I do get that the cask strength stuff is appealing to people that drink straight or just without-mixer, but eh.

Part of the idea is you are getting the full flavor.
But I do agree, ABV can be an issue.

Highest Ive had is 130 proof. Bourbon cant go into the barrel higher than 120 proof so you dont get much higher than that.

Ya, sounds about right.

I just like something I can sip on, but not get too buzzed too quickly.
I'm not sure how much cask straight stuff I've ever tried.

But something as dumb as the 99 shooters is a bit much for me.

So do you oversee Southern, in general?
Or are you part of it? If you don't mind I might ask you a question from time to time.
