They are seeing more new cases despite something like 70%+ of the population having a vaccine. The good news is that the deaths are lower than at the peak last time, but not sure that will hold up after a week or two. It's really strange.

Isn't the orthodox population virulently antivax?

My guess it's the ultra-orthodox community who are dead-set on refusing vaccines

This is interesting, I didn't hear about this group in Israel, thanks.

I guess to me it's crazy to see a record number of cases (even with delta) since so much of the country is vaccinated, but I just read an article saying it's still well over 50% of new cases are caused by the unvaccinated which makes sense so maybe it's not that crazy after all.

Their current 7 day avg deaths seem to be around high 20s and 7-day average of new cases about 1-2 weeks ago was around 6.5-7k. Thats a 0.3 to 0.4 mortality rate. Thats almost 5 times less than the US. I'm curious if their hospitals are being overwhelmed like ours are in the South.

Israeli data also suggests some waning in efficacy of the vaccine over time. American and British data haven't shown that, although their studies haven't been nearly as robust.

didn't they refused to vaccinate the Palestinians? and when they finally complied, they sent faulty/expired vaccines?
stupid move, i say.

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/18/world/middleeast/israel-palestine-vaccine-deal.html

In February and March, Israel gave vaccines to more than 100,000 Palestinians who work as day laborers in Israel, but resisted vaccinating millions of other Palestinians living under some form of Israeli control in the West Bank and Gaza

An Israeli official, who asked to remain anonymous because he was not authorized to speak publicly, said that the initial batch of doses would expire at the start of July and said that would give enough time for Palestinian health workers to administer them.

With ~60% of the population fully vaccinated, that means 3.7 million people still vulnerable and that's plenty for the virus to keep spreading.

If you want to use this data to say something meaningful about the vaccines, it's probably more useful to look at hospitalizations and deaths instead of cases - and more importantly how many of them were fully vaccinated. The article in post #8 mentions a daily sample where <9% of the severe cases in Israel were fully vaccinated. That definitely speaks in favor of the vaccines.
