Sounds like their endgame is bored children. These don't effect adults, who will very likely continue playing games and the like as they will.

They tried that here

No homework until grade 3

Granted we still had tests but I doubt they were as intensive as whatever Chinese kids have to do.

Video games are one of my biggest and most cherished hobbies, but if they were ever banned or limited I could easily adapt and find infinite other fun things to do. Even funner things, actually. Healthier, more productive things.

As much as I love video games, im realistic about how necessary they really areor arent.

Under normal circumstances? Yeah. As a kid I'd go out and play. Problem is, there's still a pandemic going around so that stuff is one bad sniffle away from lockdown. As much as China says they have it under control, it's... not very believable.

That said, we live in an age where video games, phones, movies, etc are way more popular than most other activities. Not to mention they're stupid big industries. Hand-waving it off as "lol not important" is a little dismissive.

Regular video games aren't banned or restricted. This is just for online games.

Honestly children shouldn't be exposed to online gaming at a young age it's too toxic

Yea that seems fair. The only homework I recall having before 3rd grade was printing my name over and over? Lol
I actually recall reading 20 minutes a day, I had this metal ring with a bunch of tiny paper books, which had like nursery rhymes and stuff like that. But I also had an older sister who put on the 20 minute timer for me and made sure I read, lol

I teach 7th grade and do give homework (not daily) but many peoples perceptions of homework has certainly changed here in America. Some admin actually recommend not giving homework, or grading it (someone once recommended I give optional homework that students could do if they wanted to I was like hmmmm), since it is inequitable (consider: some students have quiet homes in which they can study, some have noisy homes with younger siblings they have to babysit, etc). Plus you cant always tell who cheated and who actually did their homework independently.

I try to find a balance by grading hw on completion (so, full credit if you did it or at least attempted it). I remind my students not to fret if they do not know the answer to a problem (since homework is meant to be practice and not a quiz) but to come back with the intention of asking how to solve it. But honestly, at my school, its mainly the math and English teachers who assign homework
Good post, homework was always the struggle for me and kind of ruined school. I'm glad they are changing the approach a little? I didnt know other people had experience with no homework in the earliest grades, I thought it was a weird curriculum thing here, I guess.
