Not every possible opinion is represented among the scientific world. At least not the part that can be taken seriously.

Was the spirit of that locked topic to hint at people to not get vaccinated? Pretend I know nothing about the TC or their history (I dont). I took it as reassuring that natural antibodies are effective if you happen to have already been infected. Obviously a vaccine on top of that is the way to go. Extra obvious to get a vaccine instead of purposeful infection not sure why some were making that mental leap (there are deleted messages there so maybe Im missing something).

This is really unscientific. "Being a scientist" is not what makes something true or false. It's about observation and deductive reasoning. People out here like this thinking they're defending science by turning it into an orthodoxy. That doesn't help.

You don't have the training necessary to be able to interpret and critically examine scientific articles.

You don't know what training I do or don't have.

Science takes arguments on their merits, not on the credentials of who makes them. Many of histories biggest scientific discoveries have come from people not regarded as scientists by their peers precisely because they challenged the consensus. If you are disagreeing with the majority of scientists, you're probably wrong, but not always, and not because you haven't been ordained a scientist through whatever system of credentials you pick.

And it's a scientific observation of human psychology that this "science doesn't care about your feelings" sort of science as identity crap inhibits rational thinking on the part of the person saying that and the people they are saying it to.

Why do you think scientific training is so protracted? What do you think people do for all that time?

What you should do, as a layperson, is turn to the expert consensus.

Scientists are often wrong. Not because they suck and you could do better, but because inductive inference is hard (like literally computationally hard, intractable), and evidence evolves over time.

You should trust experts, and continue listening as things evolve.

What's your reaction to situations where the expert consensus is clearly, dangerously wrong?

I'd like to agree with you, but with this kind of track record, how can you condemn people who are skeptical of experts?
Without going into the whole droplets vs aerosols discussion: the people in those tweets aren't laypersons but scientists themselves and therefore this isn't exactly a good example for what's the discussed before.

Who decides who the experts are though? A layperson might say I like these scientists more than those scientists. And history isn't being kind to the largest and best known institutions right now.

Except for the kookiest of kook ideas, most dissenting opinions around COVID have at least some credentialed person that you could point to as making a sensible argument for it, even if they're wrong. But sometimes those dissenting experts aren't wrong.

When you have 10000 scientists saying one thing, and 1 scientist saying another, might be easy enough to reason what voice to listen to.

Btw, i want to clarify something. Science is largely not driven by "lone geniuses" but by a slow accumulation of evidence from many many people. To the extent to which it ever was, that era of science ended around the time when we developed widely accessible indoor plumbing. Entirely an artifact of science not existing as an institution, and being driven by children of rich people who had time to fiddle around while the rest of humanity starved while mining coal or whatever.

Not sure what else you want me to respond to. The problem of deciding who the true experts are is as old as Plato's Republic. I'm also frustrated by the spread of misinformation and the poor decisions many people are making around COVID. But I don't think solving that problem is nearly so easy as you want it to be. No expert is infallible, identifying misinformation is hard, and getting people the right information is more difficult work than just deleting wrong information. One place to start is to approach the discussion with some hubris, with the knowledge that mistakes have been made and that there was more going on behind changes in messaging than simply changes in the best available data.
