Itd just break up in the atmosphere right? So the asteroid get broken down to cute mini pieces and at worst prob would ravage only a small part of the planet ?

We couldn't survive the one that killed the dinosaurs, and that was significantly smaller.
Idk if this is true but in an almanac i read as a kid the remnants of the meteorite that killed the dinos was located in new mexico. The crater looked tiny in the photos. idk how that was able to make so many species extinct.

Not really true. We can survive. Just not everybody.

The sun was covered and it was dark 2 years and there were tons of other reactions that lead to destabilization of the ecosystem.

An asteroid the size of a planet... suddenly takes course toward Earth?
I don't think you understand space. There are no Mars-sized asteroids (and at such size, they'd no longer be asteroids) in our solar system that can just up and decide to go hurtling towards Earth.

I saw an article a few days ago saying even a modestly sized one would require multiple impacts from ships of ours to actually change the trajectory of something with our current levels of technology. Since it's off a good ways, we definitely don't have any formal plan for these events, or any military research to make weapons that would be effective in space on large objects.

A rogue object like that, we'd see it coming decades away. Unless you're in a Michael Bay movie, then you'd only notice a few months beforehand because everyone in his movies are idiots. But should it miss "the bouncers" (Saturn and Jupiter), it doesn't even have to hit us to fuck us up. A couple million km's out would still be enough to cause massive flooding, tidal waves, and screw with our rotation and orbit. If it hit, everything dies.
