https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/aug/27/china-bans-celebrity-rankings-in-bid-to-rectify-chaos-in-the-fan-community

Chinese authorities have banned online lists ranking celebrities by popularity, as regulators continue a drive to clean up fame and fandom culture.
According to regulations published in state media, all existing lists that rank Chinese stars must also be removed from the internet.
Only lists that rank works such as songs, films and TV shows can be published but they must reduce the emphasis on likes and comments, and instead increase the weight of indicators like work orientation and professional evaluation.
In June the office of the central cyberspace affairs commission announced a two-month special operation targeting fanclub culture, known as fan quan, which it said negatively affected the mental health of children.
The stated reason is to prevent online bullying resulting from fandom wars, but... come on. This is creepy. At best it's a great example of the road to hell being paved with good intentions, and at worst it comes across as simply a measure to consolidate state power by making the voices of anyone famous directly accountable to and controlled by the state.

It's not a bad idea. But it's also major censorship, and the government has way too much control.

You mean to prevent things like this from happening?

https://www.businessinsider.com/kylie-jenner-gofundme-fans-crowdfunding-billionaire-2018-7

People are donating money to Kylie Jenner to help her become the world's youngest billionaire.

Celebrity worship is gross and shouldnt be encouraged among children imo.

Considering where it's happening, it's probably this one.

Yeah cuz working class children are known for their disposable income and knowledge of crowdfunding?

Obviously celebrity worship isn't good but there's a gap between that and people running fan websites that the Chinese government now wants to scrub out.

Fandom communities formed in China in recent years demand fans to buy commodities endorsed by their idols or even pay the websites and platforms to move the stars higher up in the rankings, so that they can earn more money and win better advertizing contracts.

I'm liking this new tougher China cracking down on all the loopholes they left out/overlooked for sake of fast development. Tech companies, corporate privacy, billionaires, celebs, etc. They all need to be reined in, no one should have too much power and be able to build a cult of personality. Including government figures of course.

Let the youth be interested in something valuable instead of wasting money on idols or e-celebs.

Its ridiculous, too, how people will condemn the exploitative practices of billionaires then in the next breath condemn Chinas government for cracking down on the exploitative practices of billionaires.
