He was agoraphobic and afraid to leave the house in fear of being attacked or robbed (which does happen in my city, sadly). He's gotten better and now considers himself to be handicapable and even works and commutes downtown. It's been hard sometimes though, lots of people get caught in a cycle of pity and depression.
