how about 30 minute 'forced' unpaid lunches that you always have to work through and have to individually report when you work through them to get paid for them only to get reprimanded after doing it more then once?

One time I only had 30 minutes to eat and that meant a lot of choices. Today Ive got over an hour and that gives me plenty of time to shop. Im always on the lookout for something new. My latest new discovery is Noodles & Company, a new grocery store with a twist.

See, Noodles & Company is a locally owned grocery store offering many Asian and Chinese selections. Ive been using it for a few weeks now. Ill admit it. I like shopping there. I like the selection, especially the large selections at the front of the store. I like the layout and that there are many types of food. I like the way the store is set up, and I like the selection. It took me a little while to get a handle on the menu. The menu is a little daunting but you can easily find what you want.

Obviously there has to be some threshhold of what separates a short paid break from a longer unpaid break. US Dept. of Labor says 5-20 minute breaks should be paid, 30+ "meal periods" not. Seems ok to me. Doesn't mean your employer can't have a more generous standard.

This

30min unpaid isnt that crazy

30min breaks should be half pay. I don't even leave for lunch because most truck deliveries come at that time and I end up on the forklift.

Also the road is nothing but others leaving for 30min to rat race to a drive thru, then race back scarfing their food down just to make it on time...waste of gas/stress.

Definitely. These mandatory breaks exist for the only reason of keeping your hours below a certain point. You should have the option to take it, but get paid if you choose to work through it.

You should never be forced to work through a lunch by default. Employer abuse/exploitation

Grub hub or order ahead of time at a fast food place, if not close by? If you don't make your own lunch. But lunches should accommodate travel for sure.

Agreed.

Luckily, as a building IT support tech, I can in practice take as long as I want to eat the food at my desk once I get it, so long as there isn't anything pressing going on.

sure, but what can you do about it? you report it and suddenly you're fired for 'under-performing'. and reporting that you're working through 9 out of every 10 dinner breaks had my manager sitting me down and demanding that i stop that and take a break on an overnight shift where i was handling time sensitive samples with no help...

He's right. Especially since a lot of places are packed during the lunch period, so you have to wait in a line until it's time to place your order, and then wait for them to prepare it. Especially now, with a lot of restaurants understaffed.

An hour really should be the standard.

If Im working an eight hour shift, then I want eight hours of pay. Or I want the option to not take the break. Many places wont let you choose to not take the break because it is thirty minutes per day they can not pay each worker.
