Partly because the pseudo-medieval setting and awesome music maintain a certain retro chic that QII lacks.
But also because I legitimately think the combat is better.

Music back then was just as crucial to development as the gameplay itself. Can't forget that.

In terms of music and atmosphere, yes. I think Quake edges out Quake 2 in level design from a gameplay perspective as well for the most part.

Combat-wise, I disagree, at least to the extent that I think Quake 2's combat in terms of weapons and enemy design and composition after Unit 3 beats out Quake.

Unfortunately for Quake 2, the first three Units (out of ten total) are probably half of the game. I genuinely do not fault people for losing interest in Unit 2 and most of 3. It is a fucking slog.

You could even say it's... a strogg

Quake 2 and 4 are boring.

Quake III suffered from "came out at the same time as Unreal Tournament" syndrome

I respect Quake, though the Quake II intro alone still gets me hyped. Theres simplicity to it, but also has details that pull you in and theres an overall feel that makes me think of Event Horizon mixed with Warhammer.

IIRC, the weapons were balanced a bit better in Quake II. At least it wasnt just a scramble for the rocket launcher. Rail gun and super shotgun were popular, too.

I kind of feel like binging 90s id Software now, if only to refresh my memory and see how my reactions to things would be now after going through Dusk, Amid Evil, etc. The only "retro" things I've done recently are Arcane Dimensions and the Plutonia Experiment.

The best "new retro" shooter I've played recently is Prodeus. It's on GamePass and it's amazing if you're into slightly more vertical 90's FPSes like Duke Nukem 3D.

The thing about that era of gaming is that much of the design absolutely holds up, but is held back more by technology than actual game design choices.
