Gen alpha entire childhood is gonna be defined by quarantine, masks, and breathing problems.

I kid just started kindergarten. Thankfully they require masks. I really want that approval for younger kids to get the vaccine

It's a pretty low percentage. Still, how much lower would that number be if people had been better about wearing masks? Or if more people had gotten vaccinated? Or if schools weren't so disorganized with their policies?

But those southern governors don't think that's enough to make them wear masks. Not enough death, no mask.

Maybe when we got over 1000 they'll finally reconsider. Gotta get those numbers up.

I'm not defending the southern governors or people that don't wear masks (I'm fully vaxed and wear a mask). They should be mandating masks in schools and vaccines in any public sector job. I just don't see 430 as a big number.

There was a story recently about my county having its first kid under 15 die and to me, I was more surprised that it was the first one after such a long time. We have gone over a year in a global pandemic and have had only 430 kids in total die. Don't get me wrong, it would better if that number was 0, but it just doesn't seem like something to cause fear or justify closing schools again when the number is so low.

It's more than enough to at least mandate masks in schools. Even if it was only 20 kids, it shows they CAN die from this, and there's no logical excuse to let them gather in schools without protection.

Trash hick governors are just catering to their idiot antimask voters.

Kids are super resilient, way more than adults. So a sick kid in the ICU has a high chance of bouncing back. I'm not surprised so few kids have died but I bet you a significant more are in the ICU if not intubated. Do you really want to put your kids through that?

Pediatric ICUs are starting to fill up. School just started 2 weeks ago here in Louisiana. It'll take a few weeks from that for it to really spread. There will be more and more asymptomatic kids who are spreading it and eventually it'll surge among kids, all the while pediatric ICUs are filling up.

Thats what scares me the most, kids not getting optimal care because theres no pediatric ICU beds, so they have to wait in the ER or somewhere else or get flown to a different city, which is already happening.

No but we're talking about the potential stunting of millions of children's education and social development which could have a significantly negative impact on our society for decades to come.

So as messed up as it is sometimes judgments calls such as this have to be made despite the risk.

Public education in the US has been stunted for a long time now. It's an excuse used by people who don't actually care about children's wellbeing, they just want to reopen schools so their parents can go back to work.

Well parents need to work to provide for their children so that's a solid reason in and of itself. That and the risk of said children falling years behind in core subjects and social growth is another.

In the school district I work at, we have been open 4 days, and the covid cases between students and staff are over 200. I worked during the school opening last year, and this is completely different. While we have a mask mandate, there are just too many kids to police this rule for the teachers. I walk through the halls and there are high school kids with masks entirely off, noses showing, pulled down under chins, etc. It is a mess. Last year was treated almost as if students were in prison. Single file lines through the halls with distancing/masks and a couple of teachers to make sure everyone is doing what they should.

A neighboring district has been open a few days longer, and they have had 4 staff members die of covid so far. Though that district does not have a mask mandate.

All staff should be required to be vaccinated.
On top of that if I'm a teacher, I'd wear an N95 most of the time and keep some hand sanitizer with me on a keychain attached to a necklace so I can easily just squeeze some and clean my hands.

Eh, not even then it seems for a lot of people. There have been plenty of reports of people who got covid, nearly died or have had loved ones die and still if asked if they could have gotten the vaccine before, they still would not and will never. There is a political line drawn in the sand that will never be undone for some reason.

People, including libs, make this decision every day in a bunch of ways. For example, people accept the risk of injury or death caused by high(ish?) allowable speeds on public roads because they decide commerce is worth it. I am not comparing COVID to Trucking, just using it as an example of society accepting risk for the greater good of commerce. It is one of many decisions that is being made where the risk of injury to a few is worth the benefit gained for the group.

For schools, it seems insane to not require masks or vaccines for those that can have them. But I feel like there is a general societal need to get kids in school so that they actually learn something. The last year has been terrible for academic growth. States and parents should be doing everything they can to mitigate the risk but at some point we shouldn't stop school because its possible a few kids may die.

Sadly I predicted this was going to happen a month ago.

Keep in mind they have only been back to school a week.

This is going to get much worse if they stay with the no mask mandates.

For reference 94000 kids are known to have contracted covid last week in the US.

If you have a point in bringing this up, Im not seeing it. Even if adult to kid spreading happens more than kid to kid spreading, it still presents a significant threat, and one that is only going to worsen if we keep giving the virus more opportunities to mutate.
