Was Sega right for doing this?

Part of me feels it was wise to have an anthropomorphic animal protagonist because it provides immediate contrast with a human Mario. On the other hand, it led to a bunch of furry side characters -- some of whom weighed the series down.

It's easier to come up with (name) the (animal) than it is to revolutionize gameplay mechanics.
