in the Angel comics that follow the final season, which are canon iirc, *heavy spoilers* Fred is eventually resurrected, I think

She was real life pregnant, so he probably did it as a way of punishing her by associating her baby with demon spawn.

Not even just season 4 - Cordelia was impregnated at least 2 other times that I can think of off the top of my head. In season 1, and then in 2 by the demon with the eye on the back of its head.
