Say tomorrow, some purple alien dude came to Earth and snapped us. 50% of life was eradicated instantly. He then fucks off back to space, never to be seen again.

What would be the fallout of such an event? Both short term and long term.

We'd lose hundreds of years of progress and fascist dictatorships show up everywhere as they take advantage of the chaos.

Things would get pretty chaotic in the first few years but eventually order will return.

Millions more would die from a sudden system and logistic collapse.

And then when half the population came back, probably hundreds of millions would die of starvation and exposure as it's not like our species would remotely be prepared for a sudden doubling of the population overnight.

But society would come back even if the decade-ish that followed was hell.

I don't think we would. On top of so many people becoming depressed and losing the will to live with their families torn apart, the damage to necessary infrastructure would collapse all the major countries into fragmented communities. The number of abandoned, crashed vehicles would take probably a decade to clean up. Power grids would go off line, Import and export goods would be dried up for years. There would be way too much room for power hungry, armed people to take control. It'd probably be like the Stand but with more people.

Nobody comes back in this hypothetical. Theyre gone for good.

We would be fine.

Probably an upsurge in growth and technological development until systems solidify and stagnate again.

Pretty sure it would just become a Mad Max type situation. Except murder and rape to skyrocket as there would be no more rules or laws to follow anymore. Half the people whose job it was to stop you are gone and most of the other half who lived probably don't give a shit anymore.

We would most likely see something like on Defiance or Dominion where individual city states pop up. There would be no more countries or world order. I think people are severely underestimating the impact of nearly four billion people just disappearing forever in the blink of an eye. Not to mention it includes all life, so there goes half our food supply as well. Plus life would count as trees and plants to, so we would just end up suffocating to death from lack of oxygen.
