Eh there are bands I like who didn't "start out at their peak" - Kent and Rammstein had some alright songs in their original albums but I think they built steam with each new release.

Oh I guess IMO Metallica did improve for a few albums. It's been downhill ever since the black album with some being worse than others but nothing they've ever done has come close to the black album.
