They probably would have had to modernize as rebel forces internally would have had issues with them eventually. Instead we distablized the country and took it out of its natural progression. So if anything we just delayed the take over and subsequent rehabilitation by 20 years In favor of a lost war.

I imagine Afghanistan would've been a similar boat as Saudi Arabia; very limited human rights, those unwilling to follow conservative Islamic social customs subjected to abuse by the government...

Afghanistan would have abandoned religion, adopted socialism, established free colleges and abortion clinics, and put all of their energy into the social and scientific advancement of humankind. It would've been like Star Trek.
