Damn you didn't put FF8 on there. I know it gets a lot of hate (and some is perfectly valid), but my gosh I love that fucking game. It to me just has the best cast of characters.

Outta the ones listed, I'd choose FF9, that's my second favorite.

There are just too many flaws with ff8 to consider it among the top. I would also argue ff9's combat is also severely flawed, but its story and camp and positivity is really something special. I do think ff9 is undeniably worse than the other titles here, but it has some super super strengths. FF8 does not. Except its soundtrack.

7 and nothing else in the series comes close. Maybe 14 but ive never played it and its a different sort of thing.

man ff7 is one of my fav games ever. it has the best worldbuilding, by far, of the series, and the best atb combat too

it is tied for me for first and ffx. both have the best combat of the series imo

the main thing holding tactics back is the ost compared to the rest of the series, it is still incredible though

It could still use more party slots. If you keep all the "uniques", you only have room for three generics (incidentally, the game drops three semi-unique generics onto you) to do quests, and no space for monster breeding poaching. PSP adds eight more slots, but also two more uniques. Six is barely enough for monster breeding, and you're still out of luck if you kept your starting party for some reason.

Also doing something about the save-traps would be nice, rather than expecting us to keep two saves.

FFT's biggest problem IMO is the lack of side content. You have a relatively limited amount of story missions, an optional endgame dungeon, a small handful of short late-game recruitment missions...and that's it, beyond getting in random fights. This would be fine, except for half the fun of these games is training your units into gods of war that have no one worthy to fight once you get to that point.

The Tactics Advance series had a much greater wealth of side missions, and as much I hate to admit it since the game is trash on nearly every other level, FF Tactics A2 finally got the challenge aspect right; there's a wealth of meaty late-game side content and enemies that will give even your high-level units a run for their money.

The entire Beowulf/Reis/Worker-8/Cloud part is a side-quest.

i dont think grinding is fun. i dont like overtraining my chars. most of my ff runs involve trying to level as little as possible to make fights interesting.

fft main problem is balance and grinding to unlock jobs in the main story imo

i actually am. especially the 2nd game. but i have never done the post end game content

I say 4 only because it was my real first one. I played 1 on the NES but never got into it.

But realistically, FF14 might be the best. It's got fan service from pretty much every FF game made.
