Some of the people interviewed here were shown images of 9/11 and thought the pictures were of Kabul.

The US werent really prepared to nation-build in Afghanistan but Im not really sure who would. Outside of the cities the people are disconnected from the outside world and are just concerned with day to day survival. They are a very poor country with low literacy rates. Imagine trying to teach them a complicated concept like democracy, let alone the logistics of it. Part of me feels like 20 years doesnt even make a dent in that.

Democracy isn't all that complicated. The Founding Fathers didn't know what 9/11 was either, and they figured it out.

To be less jokey: the first Afghanistan election had 80% turnout. It declined thereafter as people lost faith in the obviously corrupt government they were voting upon. Which isn't all that foreign a notion.

Why does it matter if they know about 9/11? It seems pretty irrelevant.

Because it's why we invaded their country.

Well one I doubt they call it 9/11 (the ones who do know) also I doubt their media would just come out and say they just yeeted two towers over in America.

That would be like telling your civillians. Hey we just majorly pissed off the strongest military in the world. But dont worry we will be fine.

What media do you think the rural people get?

I don't know. Figured theyd have something akin to newspaper or radio stations. Word of mouth is also a thing. Im sure some people travel. But I bet the media is shitty and only tells them what they want them to know if they do have it.

I mean it sounds like they are cut off from the world. Plus newspapers? Their literacy rate there is not so great.

Im sure they get news from the governtment somehow. Maybe just not that often. But surely the government has ways of communicating with the populace for at least stuff like informing them of new laws and whatnot.

You probably didn't mean it like that, and maybe I'm being overly sensitive due to my Pakistani heritage, but they're poor. Not stupid.

Further, I doubt many Americans know about 7/7. Do we use that as the basis for further assumptions?

I am not calling them stupid. But they have a 38% literacy rate in Afghanistan. So getting stuff down on paper, working out logistics would be difficult right? These people are just trying to survive day to day. Im talking about rural Afghanistan, which is where the journalist goes to ask about these pictures.

As for why 9/11 is important, its the justification Americans use for invading Afghanistan. I am not calling the people stupid for not knowing that. These are innocent people just trying to survive. They dont know what the Taliban played a part in, shit, they probably dont even care about who the Taliban are due to how autonomous parts of the country are.

The reason I highlight the statistic in the title is people have directed so much hate at Middle Easterners post-9/11, yet so many in Afghanistan, the country we retaliated against, arent even aware of what happened. Or its just ancient history to them like one of the soldiers said. As times gone on, to us here in the states and the western world, its become less and less clear why we were still there too, yeah?

The problem is that the majority of the US populace is anti-imperialist. So even though we effectively conquered the country, we left everything up to the native and got really nothing out of it. They don't share views and have no interest and having government that is based on our values. From what I can tell they just gave up even though they were apparently 300,000 strong.
