I'm pretty sure that before, I could expand that without being signed in. Now, when I try to do so, I get a pop-up asking me to sign in or register, otherwise the replies aren't expanded.

Yes, but it's not just replies, you can't even open up pictures or retweets without that pop-up blocking you. It's awful.

You can still share direct tweets by clicking/tapping the share icon. You just can't expand or anything without a sign-in but it's fucking Twitter wgaf.
