People complain about being there, people complain about leaving. Doesn't matter what it is, people will complain. Truth of the matter is, we should have been gone.

Is that why there were miles-long traffic jams at the Kabul airport, and people literally hanging onto the sides of planes as they're taking off and falling to their deaths?

Afghanistan isn't really a country. It's a bunch of tribes who don't give a shit, won't work together, and won't oppose the Taliban as long as they let them live. You can't make that into a democracy strong enough to fend off the Taliban.

Probably because we're seeing the fruits of a 20 year, 500k lives, $2 trillion dollar invest go up in flames before we even truly got boots off the ground.

Is that not worth criticizing?

You've never heard of Afghanistan in the 60s-80s. It was the best Era for Afghanistan in terms off freedom. But the soviet war and following civil war did a number and pushed Afghanistan back several decades. Many parties are at fault gerre, but the U. S. did create the Taliban (founded in Pakistan) to fight off the Russians. The Taliban split in two with the extremist faction we know today went rogue and took over Afghanistan in the mid 90s to 2001. The majority of Taliban are coming from Pakistan, and the Pakistani government are not doing anything about it. They need to be sanctioned.. There's also a lot of corruption in the with the previous president (Karzai) Afghanistan making deals with the Taliban.

Maybe the Afghan government didn't learn anything from the u.s. for the past 20 years, it was but it's not like the U. S. stuck around because they cared.

Because the media is very selective in what they cover. They never cared about the American troops or Afghan civilians that were dying over the past 10+ years. Now they're making it seem like Afghanistan was a great place until Biden did this. And posters here are too clueless to realize they're being misled.

Shop owners painting over posters of women at a beauty salon because they're afraid of brutal retaliation by the Taliban.

  • A tearful Afghan reporter appeared at the White House today begging for Biden not to abandon them.
  • The first female mayor of an Afghan town says she expects to be murdered.
  • The laughable US intelligence said the Taliban wouldn't move back in for 20 years. They instead retook the country before we were even fully out.
  • This is being compared to the fall of Saigon, where the North Vietnamese retook the city as we were pulling out. People were left behind as cargo planes full of people desperately tried to escape before being killed.

In short, we fucked up. BAD.

I was in third grade in Saigon in the spring of 1975. Dad, a former South Vietnamese lieutenant fluent in several languages, was a managing editor of an English-language weekly called the Vietnam Sun. He told Mom the end of our world was coming with the advance of North Vietnamese communist forces. She made cloth backpacks for us five kids, ages 8 to 3, and bought us tennis shoes for the first time in case we had to literally run from Vietnam through highways and forests to refugee camps in neighboring countries. He bought poison. If we cant make it out, thered be a last supper. He didn't want to watch his kids suffer.

Try to put you politics and finger pointing aside and realize we fucked up. We abandoned these people.

Yeah we fucked up by going there in the first place. Clearly we can't nation-build and this is a reminder to us all that it's time to stop waging these endless wars. Hundreds of thousands have died, including thousands of Americans. People like you who support endless war truly baffle me.

Despite your bullshit about "endless wars," we were making progress in Afghanistan. It was slow going. No doubt. The job wasn't going to be finished anytime soon. No question. But the country was changing. The first female mayor. Girls in school. We were making a difference. We made these people promises and then abandoned them at the drop of a hat. America shouldn't get to just break a country and then walk away like, "oops. my bad." We have a commitment to those people.

in terms of their military self-defense capability, no we were not

us leaving wasn't out of the blue--it was negotiated by trump admin people, with the taliban+afghan government, and generally agreed to by democrats.

the idea was that we would leave, and the hundreds of billions of dollars of military equipment we gave them would ensure they would be safe

instead what happened was the troops entrusted with that hardware deserted repeatedly and left it lying there, and the taliban took it and used it. cities that should have been costly for the taliban to seize were taken with minimal casualties and they became stronger over time, instead of weaker in the theoretical war of attrition.

meanwhile, the government continued to lose troops to desertion, not battle.

if this sounds like iraq it's because it also happened in iraq with ISIS

the men trained to fight for these democracies we have set up have zero faith in them
