Is the rest of the series about talking to spirits? I just did the first 3 cases of the 1st game

Spoiler alert, it's not going to get better anytime soon. You're definitely going to drop the series with the 4th game.

So far it was inserted incredibly randomly and determined the outcome of a case. It was tacked on nearly at the end and not really associated with the evidence.

It also changes perception. If cases can be solved with magic, anything is possible and not necessarily based on logic

Ah. I thought maybe you had a religious reason for disliking it.

I really don't see the problem with the magic... i mean its a video game so yea... have some video game mechanics?

what I can tell you in the lastest remaster, at the very least (i haven't played the second one yet) there is literally 0 magic. its all logic and deduction.

It's just the first 1-2 and 1-3 that is really awkward with the magic. It gets really toned down and when it's not it's used very creatively into the actual case itself. I promise you after you do the 4th case you will leave very satisfied. The magic kind of turns mostly into a investigation game mechanic where Phoenix can detect when someone is lying and you use logic and evidence to prove them wrong.

Thanks. This makes me feel better about it. I don't mind it if it's used consistently as a game mechanic, just not as a random deus ex machina to determine the outcome of a case

Understandable. If I was playing a game that highlighted the use of deductive reasoning and critical thinking I'd be put off by the use of magic as well.

Oh yeah, the use of spirit channeling in 1-2 is by far the worst use of deus ex machina in the series. Also the culprit just being a massive idiot despite being built up as unstoppable. It's really an incredibly poor case on retrospect, bottom 5 case I'd say. The best part is in the first trial when you break down April. It's mostly uphill from here thankfully.

1-2 is the worst case in the series and it's more or less because of how spirit channeling is used. I don't remember it being that bad in 1-3, but maybe that's just because everything 1-3 is kind of crap.

It doesn't go away, but it definitely gets better and some of the best cases in the franchise spefically revolves around it.

It's a bit odd, yeah, but it becomes central to about 2 actual cases in the original trilogy, and part of the lore on an old case you have to solve as part of 1-4, rather than the ""Oh yeah also I'm a medium, here's a dead person, no nevermind" treatment.

Much later there's Spirit of Justice is actually based entirely around a foreign country with a justice system based around a ritual where victim's final moments can be physically seen, and potential culprits know it. It's actually quite interesting, so you may like it more than the haphazard presentation early on.

I still love 1-2, lol.

Yeah, it's quite half-baked plotwise, but it's got high stakes, the villains are memorable, and there's some fantastic sparring with Edgeworth during your first meeting in court, including one back-and-forth where you get 4 action-line-close-ups in a row, lmao.
